Soft skills to improve your career

By: Cát Phượng Huỳnh, Ho Chi Minh City College of Economics

In todays society your skills can decide who you are; the skill that will be referred to are soft skills. In this paper, I will analyze the reasons why soft skills are necessary skill for career development century.

Firstly, In order to access the importance of soft skill we have to establish what the term soft skills means. Soft skills are synonym for “people skill”. The term describes those personal attributes that indicate a high level of emotional intelligence. Simply, it is not technical- skills that can be gained from education, training programs, certifications and job traininng. Soft skills are traits that must gain from your real life experiences. An indivdual has a high degree of soft skill they are more attractive to employers. A recent report by iCIMS Hiring Insight finds that 94% recruiting professional believe an employee with stronger soft skill has a better chance of being promoted to a leadership position than an employee with more years of experience but weaker soft skill.

Throughout my research, I have found that employers look for three major skills that they have found make better employees. Communication, Teamwork and Adaptability.

The first one is communication skills, after conducting my research, I have found that being able to communicate effectively is the most important of all soft skills. Communication is not only about talking, it also can be written, visual or non-verbal. How well the infomation can be transmitted and received depends on how good your communication skills are. Moreover, your good communication skill can help all aspects of your life from your professional life to social gatherings and everything in between. Studies have shown that having strong communication skills have four major benifits. The benifits include “ landing a job”, “ being well understood”, “ hearing what people have say”, “ meeting employer’s needs”.

People who do not have communication skills have more difficult time finding a job. The reason being that the employers think that workers are more productive when they know how to communicate with their co-workers. The best communicators adjust how they talk base on whom they are speaking to. For example, the way the salesman talks to customers has a big impact on the brand, and nothing delivers customer satisfaction quite like consistently delightful communication.

According to the research, I have found that there are thirdteen ways to improve communication skills, they are :

  1. Learn a basic of nonverbal-communication.

  2. Avoid relying on visual aids.

  3. Ask for honest feedback.

  4. Engage the audience in discussion.

  5. Start and end with key points.

  6. Use the PIP approach.

  7. Record important presentation for posterity.

  8. Master the art of timing.

  9. Get comfortable speaking extemporaneously.

  10. Get to know your audience.

  11. Add novelty to improve audience retention.

  12. Focus on earning respect instead of laughs.

  13. Be a listener.

The second skill I want to discuss is teamwork skill. Teamwork means that people will try to cooperate using their indivitual skills and providing constructive feedback, dispite any person conflict between individuals. Knowing all knowledge in the world can not bring you to success if you are unable to work as a part of a team. Teamwork is not simply about cooperation. It always expects understanding between each member in a team. The team can not work effectively if the team members have a lot of misunderstands about each other. As a result of my research, when the members in team do not want to work together, the team will meet some following problems: Unclear expectation, fear, lack of context and problem-solving guidance, and lack of acountability.

Why do we need teamwork skill? Because teamwork offers differing perspectives and feedback; provides improved efficiency and productivity; provides great opportunities; promotes workplace synergy. Without the ability to effectively work in a team environment, it is really hard to achieve the collective goal of the organiation or project. “ If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together”.- African Proverb.

Studies show that there are four effective ways to build practice teamwork:

  1. Joining in teambuilding or outdoor activities in your school or your workplace.

  2. Develop collaborative group activities.

  3. Integrate simulation that focus on conflict resolution.

  4. Concentrate on effective goal setting.

The final skill that students should have in order to enhance their career developments is adaptability skills. As stated in “Business Dictionary” adaptability is “the ability of an entity or organism to alter itself or its responses to changed circumstances or environment”. Adaptability shows the ability to learn from experience, and improve the fitness of a learner as a compertitor.

Adaptability skills are some of the most valuable abilities that a person can possess because these skills allow us to survive, develop, create, learn and achieve success. Adaptability is not just about changing circumstances or adjusting to a situation. It encompasses being able to effect changes in a course of action with smoothness and timeliness, without any major setbacks. Being adaptable means being a perpetual optimist and exhibiting extraordinary resilience. These skills request the adaptation in both attitude and action, and one can not exist without the other.

If an person does not have adaptability skills, then getting over the problem and finding a resonable solution can be very difficult for them. Moreover, stresses from your work, problems from your relationships, or your failures in life can feel like bigger setbacks if you are not adaptable to changes in your life. Some people who are adaptable see their stresses as their motivations, see their problems as their challenges, see their failures as their experience. And the fact that, this kind of people always find ways to be successful, and live a life filled with opportunites to grow rather then shortcomings constant worry that things are not going their way.

Studies show that there are four ways to embrace adaptability, they are:

  1. Redefining your motivation

  2. Practicing the observation

  3. Developing COAs

  4. Setting a small goal.

In conclusion, soft skills are very necessary for career development. If you want to achieve great sucessfull in life, you need to have at least three major skills of soft-skills, which are communication skill, teamwork skill and adaptability skill. Communication skills can help transmit and receive the imformations effectively; Teamwork skills can offers differing perspectives and feedback; provides improved efficiency and productivity; provides great opportunities; promotes workplace synergy; Adaptability skills can help people be adaptable in each situations and easy finding the solutions. These skills not only help your professional life but also in your personal life.
